Australian Capital Territory Casino and Card Room Gaming

Casino Canberra is the only licensed casino in ACT. It is regulated by the ACT Gambling and Racing Commission through the Casino Control Act 2006. The casino is not permitted to operate gaming machines; only licensed hotels and clubs may operate them.

The types of gaming machines available for licensing are Class "B" draw poker and keno machines and Class "C" standard video/stepper gaming machines.

The Gaming Machine Act 2004 was put in force on 1 November 2004. The legislation significantly modernizes the old act and increases the accountability and transparency of gaming-machine operations. Subsequent reforms have progressively reduced the number of authorized electronic gaming machines (EGMs), with targets to cut authorizations from around 5,000 to 4,000 by 2020 and to 3,500 by 1 July 2025. The Gaming Machine (Compulsory Surrender) Amendment Act 2024 now provides for further phased reductions of 500 EGM authorizations every four years from 2025 to reach a long-term cap of 1,000 or fewer authorizations by 1 July 2045.
